Has a place ever expanded your mind and filled you with inspiration? That’s how I felt the moment I set foot in San Miguel de Allende. I arrived on a work trip—there to visit the Clay Imports studio as we refined pieces for Casa Zuma’s new ceramics collection. But I left feeling creatively reawakened and deeply nourished.
Every meal was a love letter. Every conversation sparked new ideas. And around every corner, I met artisans who pour their souls into what they create. In San Miguel, creativity pulses through the cobblestone streets and terracotta walls. The energy is slow, rich, and beautifully alive.
This travel guide is filled with all the moments that made me fall in love with San Miguel de Allende—and all the places I can’t wait to return to. Whether you’re going for a long weekend or staying awhile, here’s how to make it unforgettable.

Where to Stay
Villa Santa Mónica
Set inside a historic estate with sprawling gardens and arched colonial architecture, Villa Santa Monica is one of San Miguel’s most charming boutique hotels. It's quiet, romantic, and feels like stepping into a Frida Kahlo painting. A sanctuary just steps from the buzz of town.
Rosewood San Miguel de Allende
If you're looking to treat yourself, the Rosewood San Miguel de Allende is a splurge-worthy stay. The rooftop terrace boasts panoramic views of the city’s pink-hued skyline, and the serene pool is perfect for an afternoon siesta after exploring. Don’t miss sunset drinks with a mezcal margarita in hand.

What to Do
Wander Without a Map
The real magic of San Miguel is in getting lost. Stroll the cobblestone streets, peek into flower-filled courtyards, and let your curiosity lead. This is a walking city—wear comfy shoes and bring your camera.
Explore Parroquia de San Miguel Arcángel
This pink sandstone cathedral is the city’s beating heart. Whether you're stepping inside to light a candle or just admiring it from the plaza, it’s as breathtaking up close as it is in photos.
Day Trip to the Hot Springs
For a relaxing afternoon, head to La Gruta Spa or Escondido Place, both just outside town. Soak in mineral-rich thermal pools surrounded by nature—it’s a dreamy way to unwind.

Shop the Artisan Markets
The Mercado de Artesanías winds through shaded walkways and is packed with handmade treasures—from embroidered textiles to pottery and silver jewelry. It’s worth walking slowly and chatting with the makers.
Visit Fabrica La Aurora
A former textile factory turned art and design center, Fabrica La Aurora is home to galleries, studios, and concept shops showcasing work by local artists and designers. Plan to spend a few hours here—it’s a must-see for anyone who loves beautiful objects and creative spaces.

Where to Eat & Drink
Fari
A cozy, candlelit, and completely soul-satisfying spot for dinner. Fari’s seasonal menu leans vegetable-forward and inventive, with dishes that feel thoughtful but unfussy. Book ahead.
Bennu
Perfect for a leisurely pizza lunch. Set in a shaded courtyard, Bennu serves simple, organic dishes that highlight local ingredients. The handmade pastas and salads are also delicious—and don’t skip dessert.
Lavanda
Lavanda is the spot for your morning (and afternoon) coffee. Go early to beat the line and grab a spot for people watching. Their café de olla and pastries are worth the trip alone.
Rosewood Rooftop
Whether you’re staying at the hotel or not, the rooftop at Rosewood is the place to be at golden hour. Watch the sun dip behind the mountains as you sip a cocktail made with local ingredients like prickly pear or tamarind.
Aperi
Located inside Hotel Dos Casas, Aperi is a tasting menu experience from chef Oropeza. Elevated but still warm and welcoming—it’s a meal to remember.

Our Favorite Shops
Mixta
A concept store that feels like a gallery—Mixta blends fashion, home, and art from Mexican and Latin American designers. Their ceramics and textiles are especially stunning.
Tatula de la Lune
This sweet little boutique is filled with treasures—jewelry, handmade incense, and objects that feel both sacred and stylish.

Xinu Perfumes
Xinu is an olfactory experience like no other. This Mexico City-based fragrance house has a stunning micro-shop in San Miguel, with sculptural bottles and scent notes inspired by Latin American botanicals.
Casa R
Casa R is a slow-shopping haven that curates a beautifully minimal selection of homewares and artisan goods. Perfect for sourcing meaningful souvenirs or gifts.

San Miguel reminded me what happens when we slow down, tune in, and surround ourselves with beauty. It’s a place where art and life are intertwined—where even the most ordinary moment feels elevated. Whether you go to recharge, to create, or just to wander, it’s a city that will speak to your soul.
And like me, you might find that one trip just isn’t enough.
